Deputies crack down on Highland Park drug houses --- Sheriff’s
office executes search warrants on 10 residences
Wayne
County Sheriff’s Deputies executed search warrants on 10
known drug houses in Highland Park this week in a concerted effort
to rid neighborhoods of the small-time dealers that do so much
to destroy neighborhoods.
During the day-long blitz, Sheriff Warren C. Evans and members
of his Special Response Team and Narcotics Unit, forced entry into
homes that where undercover officers or confidential informants
had recently purchased a variety of drugs.
“We know that we’re not getting the drug kingpins
in these places,” Evans said. “What we are doing is
sending a message that it’s not okay to sling even small
amounts of drugs in Highland Park anymore. It won’t be tolerated.”
During the raid, officers maid 21 arrests for loitering in a drug
house and made two additional arrests on outstanding felony warrants.
They also seized about $1,000 in cash, quantities of marijuana,
crack cocaine and heroine, as well as two shotguns. At one of the
locations, a small surveillance camera was found outside the house,
which was connected to a monitor inside.
Sheriff Evans himself pulled down the cable that ran along the
outside of the home.
“The setup was designed to avoid exactly what happened,
getting busted by the police,” Evans said. “Obviously,
it didn’t work.”
Evans said that his officers would be conducting similar targeted
raids on a random basis in the near future.
