Sheriff announces results of “Click it or Ticket” campaign in Wayne County --- 6,400 tickets issued in effort to get drivers to buckle up for safety

click it or ticketStatewide statistics show that during 2002, fifty-seven percent of fatal car accident victims were not wearing their safety belts. In Wayne County, where passenger restraint usage is lower than the state average, 210 people were killed last year in car accidents, according to Sheriff Warren Evans.

Nineteen police agencies in Wayne County, including the Sheriff Office recently sent a clear message to thousands of motorists on the importance of wearing their safety belts during the “Click it or Ticket” campaign sponsored by the Michigan Office on Highway Safety Planning [OHSP]. Officers from the various agencies in Wayne County set up 75 enforcement zones and issued nearly 6,400 citations to motorists who either were not wearing safety belts or failed to adequately secure their children.

The enforcement period, which utilized high concentrations of police presence, was conducted between May 24 and June 5, said Evans. Zones were set up in several communities, including Dearborn, Westland, Taylor, Canton, Detroit and Highland Park. According to Evans, the goal of the program is to save lives by stressing the importance of wearing a safety belt.

“While this year’s enforcement period was certainly successful in terms of the number of citations that were issued, the true measure of its success will be in the lives that are saved by people deciding to buckle up,” Evans said. “Statewide, about 85 percent of people wear their safety belts, but we need to improve our usage in Wayne County.”

In addition to the seatbelt violations, more than 500 people were cited for speeding and more than 120 people were arrested for alcohol and drug related driving offenses, Evans said.
