Sheriff announces new findings in fentanyl case

--- Lab tests substance discovered at suspect’s home is potent painkiller

Wayne County Sheriff Warren Evans announced today that lab tests have confirmed that Daren Reese, who deputies arrested last week with 83 hits of heroin laced fentanyl, had a supply of the painkiller in his home.

Deputies recovered 40 grams of a white powder that, according to investigators, tested positive for fentanyl with no presence of heroin. A supply of heroin also was found at Reese's home, strongly suggesting Reese was mixing the two drugs into a lethal concoction that is believe to have played a role in scores of deaths in Wayne County in recent months.

"Given the fact that Mr. Reese had heroin and fentanyl at his home and was carrying a supply of a mix of the two on his person when he was arrested is very strong evidence that he was likely mixing the two himself," Evans said. "That further confirms my belief that Mr. Reese was the main distributor of this drug to the Jeffries housing project in Detroit."

On Thursday, Sheriff's deputies and DEA agents arrested Reese during a traffic stop immediately after he left his apartment. At the time of his arrest, Reese had a vail containing 83 hits of fentanyl laced heroine wrapped in aluminum foil packets called bindles.

Officers then executed a search warrant on Reese's home where they found additional quantities of suspected heroin, marijuana and various cutting agents. Once inside the home, deputies also found drug packaging materials and other paraphernalia, along with three handguns, a shotgun and about $5,000 in cash.

Reese was arraigned on Saturday on a 10-charge warrant that included delivery/ manufacture of a controlled substance, felony firearms and possession/use of body armor. Since Reese is a habitual offender, he faces life in prison if convicted. He is being held at the Wayne County Jail on $200,000 cash bond.
