Sheriff’s deputies to support
Muslims with presence at area’s largest mosques ---Friday
Prayer services could be targets of hate crimes
As part of his Homeland Security efforts during this time of war,
Wayne County Sheriff Warren Evans has assigned several of his deputies
and reserve deputies to provide a presence at the area’s
four largest Mosques for Friday prayer services.
Evans said one officer will patrol the exterior of the Islamic
Center of America, Islamic Institute of Knowledge, Islamic House
of Wisdom and American Muslim Mosque while another three or four
officers remain inside each facility.
“This is a very uncertain time for many people in the Arab
community. It is important that they know it is safe for them to
worship and pray for peace like everyone else,” Evans said. “While
we fully expect the general public to show great tolerance, it
is, nevertheless, important that we take these measures to discourage
anyone who might consider acting out against someone based on their
ethnicity.”
In order to avoid problems that can occur when there is a language
barrier, Evans said at least one of the officers at each location
would be a bilingual Arab American deputy.
