Sheriff's Office to provide free rape prevention class

April is Sexual Assault Awareness month in Michigan |
As part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month in Michigan, the Wayne County Sheriff's Office is offering a free Sexual Harassment and Rape Prevention (SHARP) Class at its training unit in Van Buren Township.
The four-hour course is designed to teach participants techniques to prevent professional and personal harassment. It also addresses ways in which criminals profile women for sexual assault and teaches life-saving methods to avoid becoming a victim. Specifically, the class will cover the effects of stress on survival performance, prevention psychology and the principles of avoiding an attack. If attendance in this class is strong, the department will offer a second course that includes four hours of physical defensive tactics training.
"Our hope is that this training will never have to be used,” said Wayne County Sheriff Warren Evans, but if a woman finds herself in this type of a situation, having this training could help her avoid being attacked and even save her life."
The class is being offered to the first 30 people who sign up for it.
