Detroit, MI – Wayne County showed its strength as the region's economic engine in a recent national survey that found 38 percent of companies here plan to hire in the second quarter, compared to about 25 percent for all companies in southeast Michigan.
Manpower Inc., a national temporary employment firm based in Milwaukee, conducted the survey. It found 10 percent job growth is expected in both Oakland and Macomb counties.
Reports quoted Denise DeSantis of Manpower as saying Super Bowl XL contributed to Wayne County's growth. "We believe there was an employer confidence boost with the recent Super Bowl game and the other activities in the area," Denise DeSantis of Manpower said. "You can definitely see the change in Wayne County. It is above the national average when it comes to hiring."
County Executive Robert Ficano said, "Wayne County is making strides out of a difficult economy and showing real progress towards recovery. We've been working hard to make sure our county is business-friendly, from cutting red tape to promoting programs that help companies be competitive. We're focused on having the best environment where existing and new businesses can thrive and grow."
Besides creating the Greater Detroit-Wayne County Economic Development Corp. and streamlining processes that make it easier to do business, Ficano said the county fosters strong businesses and job growth in other ways. He cited affordable health care as a key example of helping businesses recruit and retain qualified employees, and credited Health Choice of Michigan and Wayne County Four Star as making a positive difference for small businesses by offering affordable health care coverage for employees for as little as $56 a month. Wayne County is the only county with two such programs.
