News --- Development Corporation of Wayne County Awards 1.8 Million in Pre-Development Grants

Detroit, MI – The Development Corporation of Wayne County (DCWC) recently selected 13 community development corporations (CDC's) to award $1.8 million in pre-development grants. The DCWC's Pre-Development Grant Program is designed to provide up to $150,000 in funding for selected CDC's and will spur neighborhood revitalization in selected urban communities.

After review of 27 submitted applications, the 13-member volunteer committee of the DCWC recommended distribution of $1,860,100 to the selected 13 CDC's. These funds will be used to pay for pre-development expenses related to planning affordable housing developments from project conception through submission of financing.

"The Pre-Development Grant Program allows Wayne County to leverage its resources through the DCWC and reinvest significant financial support back into our urban communities and neighborhoods," said Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano.

The DCWC was created to address concerns regarding blight and needed economic initiatives within Wayne County and improve neighborhoods for low to moderate income families.

"We are pleased to provide this grant funding to community groups who are on the front line in strengthening our communities," said Wayne County Commission Chair Jewel Ware. "We believe this money will go a long way toward rebuilding our neighborhoods, house by house and block by block."

In November 2005, the Pre-Development Grant Program was created through a grant agreement between Wayne County and the DCWC with a one-time allocation of $2,286,200 to rehabilitate existing homes and develop new housing opportunities.

"My commission colleagues are pleased to approve funding to non-profit organizations to revitalize our communities," stated Wayne County Commissioner Bernard Parker. "We're excited about the projects that will emerge because of these grants."
