News --- CFO Carla Sledge Testifies Before Congress at March 16th Hearing

Washington, DC – Wayne County Chief Financial Officer Carla Sledge, a national expert in government finance, is testifying before Congress during hearings on the use of tax-exempt financings by state and local governments.

Sledge, who is president of the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA), will testify on the important benefits of tax-preferred bond financing for local governments before the House Committee on Ways and Means’ subcommittee on select revenue measures. Rep. David Camp of Michigan chairs the subcommittee, which is doing a comprehensive review of the use and benefits of such financing.

"Being able to issue tax-exempt bonds is of great importance to Wayne County and nearly every other county, city, town, village, and state across the United States,” says Sledge. "These bonds provide state and local governments with access to the capital markets and are essential financial tools for us to be able to provide adequate infrastructure to our communities and our citizens."

Sledge adds: "Any further restrictions that may be placed on tax-exempt bonds would pose great hardship to state and local governments. I appreciate the opportunity to testify before the Select Revenue Measures Subcommittee and to discuss how tax-exempt bonds are used and needed, as well as the importance for simplification rather than additional restrictions on these important financial tools."

Sledge, a CPA and a certified government finance officer, oversees management and budget for the county’s $2.2 billion government operations. Wayne County is the nation’s 11th largest county and has a budget larger than many states.

The GFOA represents some 16,000 state, provincial and local finance officers in the U.S. and Canada. Sledge also serves on the board of the Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants.
