WESTLAND, MI - Wayne County Parks’ April interpretive program lineup includes an Earth Day celebration and other family-friendly events at Nankin Mills Interpretive Center located at 33175 Ann Arbor Trail in Westland.

GRISTMILL FAMILIES OF NANKIN MILLS

1 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.

Nankin Mills operated as a Gristmill from 1842 until 1918. Many different families owned and operated the Mill over the years. Learn the history of the historic Mill and Miller’s house, longtime landmarks on Ann Arbor Trail. For ages 12 and older. Program cost is $3.00 per person; add an additional $1.00 for non-county residents. Pre-registration is required by calling 734.261.1990.

EARTH DAY EXTRAVAGANZA

Celebrate all things Mother Earth. Live animal shows, music, crafts, speakers, nutty nature re-enactors and educational demonstrations will all be a part of the family fun. This is a free event and is open to everyone. No registration is required.

WILDFLOWERS OF SOUTHEASTERN MICHIGAN

Not only are they beautiful but our native wildflowers have fascinating folk stories. Learn how wildflowers were used in the past for folk medicine and other purposes. We will share the intriguing natural history of native wildflowers, such as how ants help to plant trillium in the forest. For ages 12 and older. FROG FRENZY

6 p.m. – 8 p.m.

Children learn about the many different kinds of Michigan frogs, create an amphibian craft, and take an adventure outside to the pond to catch and release native frogs. The program also includes the opportunity to visit the nearby Holliday Nature Preserve to enjoy the spring symphony of frogs.

This program is recommended for ages 6 and older. Program cost is $6.00 per child and $2.00 per adult; and an additional $1.00 for non-county residents. Pre-registration is required by calling 734.261.1990.
