News --- Wayne County Receives a Grant for the Grosse Ile Bridge

Wayne County - The local Bridge advisory board has approved the recommendation by the Regional Bridge Council to select the Trenton Channel Bridge (Grosse Ile Bridge) for inclusion in the Local Bridge Program, which means Wayne County will receive $3.5 million for the Grosse Ile Bridge repair.

The Grosse Ile Parkway over Trenton Channel Rehabilitation project is scheduled for funding during the 2006-2007 fiscal year.

The federal and state share will fund 95% of the approach and bridge construction costs up to $3.5 million. The balance of the money, including design engineering and construction engineering are the responsibilities of the locals (Wayne County and /or Grosse Ile). Work will include repair of the concrete approaches, removal and replacement of the bridge steel deck and sidewalks, necessary repair to the existing railings and structural steel, electrical and mechanical updates to the bridge gear and locking mechanism, sandblasting and painting of the entire steel bridge.

"This is great news for the entire downriver community, especially Grosse Ile residents, as they had to endure repetitive and extended closure periods due to necessary repair work to the bridge deck," said Hassan Saab, director of Engineering.
