News --- Mental health hotline offers help

Though the spring and warm weather are a joyful time for many, some people get the blues or depression, according to the Detroit-Wayne County Community Mental Health Agency
[D-WCCMHA]

Symptoms of the blues include, but are not limited to, headaches; sleep disturbance; changes in appetite, weight gain or loss; agitation or anxiety; inappropriate feelings of guilt; decreased ability to think clearly, and decreased interest in activities one normally enjoys.

Mental health experts say people also experience post-holiday let downs after Jan. 1, due to holiday disappointments compounded by extra fatigue and stress.

Mental health experts suggest that anyone coming in contact with someone feeling blue should be a good listener and sensitive to the feelings, needs and expectations of others.

If you experience the blues or other mental health issues, county residents are encouraged to call a 24-hour help line, toll-free: (866) 289-2641

National Mental Health Association tips for dealing with the blues:

  • Establish reasonable goals and expectations
  • Limit alcohol
  • Express feelings in an open, honest and constructive open way, and always starting with "I feel..."
