Wayne County starts its annual Summer Food Service Program for children through age 18 on Monday, June 20. The program provides free, nutritious lunches at some 40 sites in Dearborn, Ecorse, Hamtramck, Highland Park, Inkster, Lincoln Park, Redford, River Rouge, Romulus, Sumpter, Taylor, Wayne and Westland.
The Summer Food Service Program is available in school districts where most children receive free or reduced-price meals during the school year. The meals are served weekdays through August 19. Meals are served over a two-hour block during lunch, but exact times vary by site. Last summer, the program provided 56,596 meals.
"Maintaining a healthy Wayne County is our top priority, and it starts with our youngest residents," said County Executive Robert A. Ficano.
The program also provides free meals for residents over 18 years old who are determined to be mentally or physically handicapped by a state or local educational agency or who participate in public or private non-profit school programs for the handicapped.
The Summer Food Service Program ensures that no child eligible for this program will be turned away. The program is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and administered by the Wayne County Department of Public Health.
