James D. Gonzales, Chief, Special Operations Division, hasbeen employed with the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office since January 1988. Mr. Gonzales' previous experience included attorney positions with Wayne County Neighborhood Legal Services and the Legal Aid & Defender Association of Detroit. His assignments in the Prosecutor's Office include assignments with the Child Abuse Unit, Prosecutor's Repeat Offender Bureau (PROB), Homicide Unit, Special Assignment Prosecutor and Docket Attorney in the Trial Division.
In January 2001, Mr. Gonzales was appointed Deputy Chief where he maintained supervisory responsibility for all Assistant Prosecutors and support staff assigned to the Juvenile Division and in November 2002, he was appointed Director of the Homicide Unit. In June 2003, Mr. Gonzales received the Spirit of Detroit Award and the Angel of Mercy Award,Save Our Sons and Daughters, for his efforts in protecting the rights of victims of homicide and their families.
In January 2004, Prosecutor Kym L. Worthy appointed him to his current position as Chief of the Special Operations Division which includes supervision over the Forfeiture Unit , the Public Integrity Unit, the Community Prosecutors Unit, Federal Liaison (Federal Gun Program) and the Felony Non-Support Unit.
Mr. Gonzales attended Wayne State University Law School, Detroit, Michigan, where he obtained his Juris Doctorate in June 1983 and the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, where he obtained his B.A. in June 1980.
