Created with the intention of keeping violent prisoners behind bars, the Parole Appeals Unit fights on behalf of victims regarding paroles considered by the Michigan Parole Board. This unit also handles commutations and pardon requests. The Parole Appeals Unit helps victims argue against a prisoner's parole at Parole Board hearings in Lansing. The unit has successfully kept murderers, child molesters, rapists, kidnappers, other assaultive and dangerous prisoners in prison. In addition to fighting paroles, the section also appeals paroles in cases where it can be clearly shown the inmate would pose a serious threat to the safety of the community if he/she were to be released. In order to receive parole release notification, the victims must register with the Crime Victim's Rights Unit of the Michigan Department of Corrections at:

Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA)
In the state of Michigan it is public policy that all persons, except those persons incarcerated in correctional facilities, are entitled to full information regarding the affairs of government and the official acts of those who represent them as public officials and public employees. The purpose of the Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA) is to inform people so they may fully participate in the democratic process. Michigan law has defined "a public record" as a "... writing prepared, owned, used in the possession of, or detained by a public body in the performance of an official function, from the time it is created. A public record does not include computer software."Michigan law provides that the FOIA separates public records into two classes:
- Those that are exempt from disclosure.
- Those that are not exempt from disclosure.
The FOIA does not require a public body to make a compilation, summary, or reports of information, nor as a general rule require a public body to create a new public record.
Fees
In requesting a public record from this public body a requestor shall:
- File in writing to the FOIA coordinator the request for public records
- The requestor shall describe the public record being sought sufficiently to enable the body to find the record being sought (including the defendant’s name, and case number).
- That the requestor shall include their name and address.
