Community Relations

Overview

The Community Relations section of the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office provides a wide variety of community based educational programs from youths, adults and senior citizens. Community Relations also includes the Wayne County Sheriff’s Reserve program, Chaplain Corp and works with the non-profit Wayne County Sheriff’s Youth Education fund, which raises private funds to support these educational efforts.

Community Outreach officers make presentations to block clubs and other community groups to inform them of the activities and safety programs provided by the Sheriff’s Office.

School safety presentations

The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office provides a range of important crime prevention services to Wayne County children.  Community Relations Officers provide educational programs such as “Don’t go with strangers”; “Say no to drugs”; “Whistle for safety”, and “Handgun safety” programs.

The Senior Safety Program

The Senior Safety Program is an informative crime prevention presentation addressing identity theft, sweepstakes and telephone scams, household and community safety tips.  One of the most popular senior safety programs is the 911 Cell Phone Program, which converts old discarded cell phones into emergency phones for senior citizens.

The Dose of Reality Tour

The Dose of Reality Tour offers youngster who have come into contact with law enforcement, or are considered a risk, a harsh glimpse into the consequences of a life of crime.  Participants hear from inmates, victims of crime and advocacy groups, such as Save Our Sons and Daughters and Mother’s Against Drunk Driving.  The Dose of Reality Tour runs Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at the Wayne County Jail.  For more information call (313) 224-0614.

Reservists

The Wayne County Sheriff Reserves are made up of a diverse group of men and women from all over Wayne County who volunteer at least eight hours per month to assist the Sheriff’s Office in some useful way.  Based on an Officer’s interest and qualifications, he or she may be assigned to a particular task that matches those skill sets.   All reserve officers may be assigned to work at any one of the special events in which the department participates.  There is a command structure and all reservist report directly to the Reservist Chief Deputy.  If you are interested in becoming a Wayne County Sheriff’s Reserve Deputy, visit www.waynecountyreservedeputies.com

 

Chaplains Corps

Chaplains are the Sheriff’s Office’s Faith-Based Ministers who provide spiritual support through routine counseling to help employees cope with the emotional stress related to police work.  A properly trained and motivated Chaplain Corps can assist department professionals and staff in the performance of their duties on a day-to-day basis, as well as a liaison and ambassador to the community on behalf of the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office.  For more information call (313) 224-0614.

 

 

Faith Based Initiatives

The faith-based initiative involves working in partnership with local churches to enhance the moral and civic values within the community, for the purpose of improving information sharing and the accompanying law enforcement response.
