Wayne County Sheriff Divisions

The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office is the second largest police agency in the State of Michigan, with more than 1,300 employees. The overall mission of the Sheriff’s Office is to serve as a support agency to the 43 police agencies in Wayne County.

jailOne of the Sheriff Office’s primary services is the operation of three jails. They include two facilities for pre-trial felons in downtown Detroit and one facility in Hamtramck for individuals who have been convicted of misdemeanors or felonies and sentenced to less than one year. Other services include providing security and other services at throughout the county’s court system, and secondary road patrols in a number of communities.

The Department also has a number of specialized units that typically are not provided by local departments and are better offered on a county-wide basis. They include:

Since July 1, 2003, the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office started providing primary police services to the cash-strapped community of Highland Park. Under the four-year contract, the department is providing approximately 40 officers, investigators and command staff.
