The Sheriff’s Special Operations Unit investigates a variety of “morality” crimes, such as narcotics, prostitution, illegal gambling and after hour clubs, as well as Internet Crimes. The Special Operations Unit is led by Deputy Chief Jadie Settles and Commander Christopher Clark.
Narcotics Enforcement

Officers working in this unit deal with the neighborhood level drug trade in several different ways. After conducting preliminary investigations, officers obtain search warrants on homes and businesses that are suspected of illegal drug activity. They then search the building for evidence. Because the drug trade is a supply and demand issue, officers will set up shop at drug houses they have busted, posing as the dealers themselves, to attack the demand side of the drug trade. When a buyer or seller of drugs is arrested, their car is towed and impounded under the county’s nuisance abatement ordinances.
To report suspected illegal drug activity in your neighborhood, call (313) 833-3190. All information will be kept confidential.

Morality [Prostitution] Enforcement

Another major concern is prostitution, which can eat away at a community’s quality of life. As with narcotics, officers go after both the supply and demand side of the sex trade. In most cases, officers conduct surveillance on known prostitutes as they solicit johns. On occasion, decoy officers will pose as prostitutes. After an agreement for sex is reached, officers move in to make the arrest. Each year, sheriff’s deputies issue citations to more than 1,000 johns in the city of Detroit, most of who drove in from the suburbs.
To report prostitution activity, please call (313) 833-3190.
