The Sheriff’s Office provides secondary road patrol throughout Wayne County and has primary responsibility for patrolling the county’s parks system. Officers provide routine patrols, as well as grant funded enforcement, such as the state’s Click It or Ticket and You Drink, You Drive, You Lose campaigns.  All units of the Patrol & Investigation section are under the command of Commander James Panackia

Mounted Unit


Mounted Unit
Officers on horses are utilized for crowd control and patrolling rugged terrain/river banks in county and city parks where traditional patrol cars cannot maneuver.  This unit provides a popular presence community parades and other special events that attract large crowds.  For more information, call (313) 224-0614.

Marine Unit


Marine Unit
The Wayne County Sheriff’s Marine Unit patrols 38 miles of international border (140 sq. miles of water) and has boats stationed Downriver, Grosse Pointe area, and Van Buren Township.  Other boats are stationed inland for emergencies on Detroit waterfront handled by Detroit, U.S. Coastguard, and Windsor police.

Boater Safety and Off Road Vehicle (ORV) Safety Classes


ORV Safety Classes
The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office conducts annual Boating Safety and ORV Safety courses for the public.  The courses are held at the Trenton Activity Center – 2700 Westfield Road, located approximately 2 miles East of I-75 and approximately 1/2 block North of West Road.  All classes begin at 7:00 p.m. each Monday night and conclude at 10:00 p.m.  To complete the course, students must attend two Monday evenings of their choice.  Students must pre-register for this course by calling the Marine Unit at (734) 675-2660. CCW Permits


CCW Permits
The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office processes thousands of requests each year for permits to carry a concealed weapon. Recently, the Sheriff and the Wayne County Clerk teamed up to make the permit process as convenient and expedient as possible by establishing a CCW One-Stop-Shop at the Sheriff’s Road Patrol Office, located at 3100 Henry Ruff in Westland. Applicants can pay their fee, be fingerprinted and submit their paperwork all at this location.

CCW Permit application procedures for Wayne County Residents:

  1. Complete the Concealed Pistol License Application
    (Download application )
  2. Get a passport quality photo
  3. Complete the Pistol Safety Training Course and obtain a certificate of completion. The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office Training Center offers co-ed and ladies only classes for a $125 fee. For more information, please contact the Sheriff’s Training Center at 734-699-6007.
  4. Take all above information to the Wayne County Clerk’s Office (link to Clerk’s website) and pay $105 in cash or money order.  The Clerk has a satellite office located at the Sheriff’s Road Patrol Office in Westland, located at 3100 Henry Ruff Road at Michigan Avenue in Westland.
  5. Call the Sheriff’s Office at 734-721-5125 to make arrangements to come in and be fingerprinted.  At the top of the receipt from the Clerk’s office you will find a Control Number that will be needed to make this appointment.
  6. On the day of your fingerprint appointment, you will need the following documents.
    1. Yellow County receipt
    2. Completed computerized Criminal History Record Request form (Download form )

 

NOTE: Renewals – follow the steps above with the exception of the pistol training course. You are required to take a three hour refresher course six months preceding the renewal application.

DDOT Bus Patrol


DDOT Bus Patrol
In May 2007, the City of Detroit’s Department of Transportation (DDOT) contracted with the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office to provide security on DDOT buses, along key routes and at shelters and transit centers. The Sheriff’s Office has provided a contingent of officers that are assigned specifically to patrol DDOT routes throughout Wayne County (and into areas of Macomb and Oakland Counties) and respond to complaints. During the school year, sheriff’s deputies will pay special attention to school kids to make sure they have safe passage to school and are not truant.

Wayne County Community College Patrol

The Sheriff’s Office provides a uniform patrol presence and investigation at Wayne County Community College District Patrols in the city of Detroit. Locations include the downtown campus (Fort Street), eastern campus (Connor Ave) and northwest campus (Greenfield Road).
