Lincoln Park father of four’s birthday wish: sex
with 14-year old girl he met on the Net --- 39-year
old was met instead
by sheriff’s
deputies
In one of its most peculiar cases to date, the Wayne County Sheriff’s
Internet Crime Unit today arrested a father of four from Lincoln
Park who investigators say wanted to celebrate his 39th birthday
by having sex with who he thought was a 14-year old girl he had
met in an Internet chat room.
What Kevin Hultgren didn’t realize, however, was that he
actually had been chatting with an undercover sheriff’s deputy.
So instead, he will be spending his birthday in the Wayne County
jail, according to Sheriff Warren Evans.
“The alarming thing about this case is that it shows very
clearly to what lengths some adult men will go to take advantage
of young girls,” Evans said. “It’s very disturbing
that a man who has children of his own would do something like
this.”
Hultgren was arrested at approximately 10:30 am outside a bookstore
on Detroit’s far east side. Investigators say the suspect,
who has children ages 11, seven, two and another due later this
year, chatted with the undercover deputy for about a month.
As part of their regular communication with Macomb County’s
Internet officers, Wayne County investigators learned that Hultgren
had chatted in the past with a Macomb deputy, although the suspect
never followed through with a meet.
“
He tried to play it safe with us because he had expressed concern
that he was chatting with an officer,” Evans said. “He
wanted to speak to the girl over the phone before he would agree
to meet. So, we used a female undercover officer to make the call
and he fell for it.”
Hultgren was charged with three counts of illegal use of the Internet.
If convicted, the maximum penalty is 20 years in prison. He is
free after having posted 10 percent of a $150,000 bond
The arrest is the unit’s first suspected sexual predator
of the New Year. In 2003, undercover officers made 33 arrests and
had a 100% convictions rate.
