Cyber unit busts ex-deputy in Internet sex sting --- Former jail officer had been terminated in April due to inappropriate conduct

A 30-year old ex-Wayne County Sheriff’s Deputy was arrested late last week by his former department after undercover officers say he arranged to have sex with what he thought was a 13-year old girl, according to Sheriff Warren Evans.

Sheriff’s Internet Crime Unit deputies arrested Todd Kasperek of Trenton on Friday evening after he showed up for a meet he allegedly arranged after chatting online with a deputy for only one day. Kasperek was formally charged on Sunday in 34th District Court with Illegal Use of the Internet and is free after posting bond.

Kasperek was fired by the Sheriff’s Office in mid-April after an investigation uncovered a pattern of inappropriate conduct, according to Evans.

“It was clear after our investigation was complete that Mr. Kasperek had not been conducting himself in a manner expected of any officer in this department,” Evans said. “Whether or not these new allegations are proven to be true, I am confident that the decision to terminate his employment was the right one.”

Kasperek had worked in the same facility as the Internet Crime Unit and even knew he may have been chatting with a deputy, Evans said. “At one point in the chat, Mr. Kasperek allegedly asked how things were going over at the county’s Internet unit, apparently attempting to trip up our officer,” Evans said.

Investigators allege that Kasperek met with undercover deputies in Macomb County expecting to meet the 13-year old girl and take her back to his home in Trenton to have sex with her. Evans said investigators have seized Kasperek’s computer, which will be checked for evidence of the chats on his hard drive.

The Internet Unit continues to maintain a 100 percent conviction rate since Evans re-established the unit in January of 2003. If Kasperek is convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison and automatic placement on the state’s Sex Offender Registry.
