Sheriff to send 50 disadvantaged kids to Saturday’s Detroit Football Classic --- Evans targets students who are excelling in school

footballFifty disadvantaged young people in Wayne County will be spending Saturday watching Alabama State University and Florida A&M battle it out in the Detroit Football Classic at Ford Field, compliments of Wayne County Sheriff Warren Evans.

Evans has purchased fifty choice seats for the game and will be giving them to outstanding kids who might not otherwise have the opportunity to go.

“Whether you play or not, football is part of the excitement and experience of college life,” Evans said. “I thought it would be nice reward some kids who come from difficult circumstances, but who are doing well in school, by exposing them to the fun side of college education.”

Evans said his staff is working with schools in Detroit and Highland Park, as well as various non-profit organizations, to identify 50 middle school and high school students who are deserving of the tickets. The Sheriff will join the students at Ford Field and enjoy the game with them.

“Certainly, there are a lot more than 50 children who deserve to be recognized, but we’re hoping to make this an annual event,” Evans said.

The Wayne County Sheriff's Office Youth & Senior Education Fund purchased the tickets, which have a face value of $100.
