Sheriff’s deputies recover $100,000 in stolen Tennessee
merchandise in Highland Park --- Out of state company used
GPS system to track down stolen truck
Sheriff’s Deputies today seized more than $100,000 worth
of popcorn and flashlight kits that had been reported stolen earlier
this month by companies located in Tennessee and Ohio, said Wayne
County Sheriff Warren C. Evans. The items were found inside a warehouse
near McNichols and I-75 in Highland Park.
The items were recovered after the Teton Transportation Company
of Seymore, TN notified the Sheriff’s Office that it
had tracked the location of a stolen tractor trailer to the address.
The company had been hauling 30 palettes of microwave popcorn,
valued at $76,274, from ConAgra Foods in Marion, OH to a Sam’s
Club in North Carolina. The truck had been stolen en route to its
location on November 11th.
When deputies arrived at the location today, the tractor-trailer
was empty, but the popcorn was inside an adjacent warehouse. Its
owner, who said the merchandise belonged to a friend who needed
it stored, allowed the deputies inside of the building. Investigators
are now trying to contact that individual to interview him.
Also found inside the warehouse were 22 of 24 palettes of Eveready
flashlights kits, valued at $33,877, that deputies later found
had been reported stolen earlier this month from a rest stop in
Virginia.
Sheriff Evans said that his officers are making arrangements for
the Eveready Corporation and ConAgra Foods to retrieve their stolen
merchandise.
