Lawrence B. Meyer - Chief of Field Operations

meyer Lawrence Meyer has been with the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office since 1976, when he began his career as a Deputy Sheriff working in the Wayne County Jail. Since that time and while rising through the ranks, he has worked as a patrol officer, vice officer, executive protection investigator, prisoner transportation and jail sergeant and fugitive team command officer. Chief Meyer has held every rank in the Sheriff’s Department including Sergeant, Lieutenant, Executive Lieutenant, Commander and Undersheriff/Chief Deputy.

He attained the rank of Police Commander in 1997 and served in that capacity heading the Sheriff’s Warrant Enforcement Bureau, Community Justice Services and the Child Rescue Task Force. In 2000, Chief Meyer was appointed by the United States Attorney of the Eastern District of Michigan as the chairman of the United States Attorney’s Committee for fugitive apprehension in Southeastern Michigan.

On January 1, 2003, Sheriff Warren C. Evans appointed Meyer as his Undersheriff and Chief Deputy. As the second in command, Undersheriff Meyer was responsible for over 1300 employees and the day-to-day management of the department, directing both police and jail operations.

Meyer retired from county service at the end of 2004 and recently returned to the Sheriff’s Department in the capacity of Chief of Field Operations.

Chief Meyer has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wayne State University. He is a member of:

  • Wayne County Association of Chiefs of Police Southeast Michigan Chiefs of Police
