Wayne County STEP Program
Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano launched STEP – Second Chance Through Expungement program - in March 2008 within Wayne County’s Department of Children and Family Services. STEP assists onetime, nonviolent offenders with removing convictions from their criminal record so that they can have greater access to opportunities otherwise closed to felony or misdemeanor offenders.
Having a criminal record often prevents people from getting better job opportunities, owning homes, obtaining licenses, and getting into professional programs. STEP is designed to help remove these barriers so that citizens can have full access to the workforce. The STEP program covers all costs for clients except when the conviction is outside Wayne County.
STEP can also help applicants with job training, educational assistance including attainment of General Equivalency Diploma (GED), job referrals, and job placement.
ELIGIBILITY
- Eligibility requirements for STEP are:
- A resident of Wayne County;
- Only one conviction (felony or misdemeanor) on your record,
- The conviction cannot be for criminal sexual conduct, drunk driving, domestic violence, or felonies involving a firearm.
