New Tax Law Requires Wayne County Real & Personal Property Taxes To Be Paid At The Office Of The City Detroit Treasurer

City of Detroit Begins Issuing Combined City/County Tax Bills, December 1, 2004

For the first time, Wayne County real and personal property current taxes, for property located in the City of Detroit can be paid at the Office of the City of Detroit Treasurer. According to Wayne County Treasurer, Raymond J. Wojtowicz, the historic change is a result of Michigan Public Act 246 of 2003 and enables City of Detroit taxpayers to have the convenience of paying their current city and county taxes with their local treasurer in the same manner as taxpayers in Wayne County?s other 42 communities.

The historic change begins December 1, 2004. The City of Detroit will issue a combined city and county tax bill. The tax bill will instruct taxpayers to pay current City and County all current 2004 real and personal property taxes at the office of the City of Detroit treasurer located on the first floor of the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center, Room 154, 2 Woodward Ave., Detroit, Michigan 48226. Current tax payments must be received by the City of Detroit no later than February 28, 2005. Current tax payments will no longer be accepted at the Wayne County Treasurer?s Office.

All real property taxes that are not paid in full by February 28, 2005, will become delinquent and will be transferred to the Wayne County Treasurer for collection and subject to the Michigan Tax Foreclosure law, Public Act 123 of 1999. Delinquent city personal property taxes will continue to be collected by the City of Detroit.

The Wayne County Treasurer has been successful in collecting delinquent City of Detroit taxes, which began March 1, 2004. According to Wojtowicz, "within the first 45 days of collection, Wayne County collected approximately $30 million of nearly $86 million in delinquent 2003 Detroit taxes and within the last nine months has received payments on more than 37,100 delinquent parcels, or nearly 34 percent of all delinquent parcels in Detroit."
