Detroit Man Charged in the Homicide of Bashar Kallabat
Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Jimmy Jermaine Pickett, 24, (DOB:4/25/1995) of Detroit in connection with the homicide of Bashar Kallabat, 56, of Bloomfield Hills. On February 11, 2020 at 10:31 p.m. Detroit Police officers were dispatched to a motel located in the 14700 block of East 8 Mile Road in Detroit. When they arrived at the motel room, they observed Mr. Kallabat with head trauma. It was determined that he died from blunt force trauma.
Investigation by the Detroit Police led to the identification and arrest of Defendant Pickett. It is alleged that the Defendant entered Mr. Kallabat's hotel room, killed him, took the victim's personal property, and left the motel. Aspects of the case remain under investigation. Further facts and evidence in the case will be presented in court at the Preliminary Examination.
Defendant Pickett has been charged with First Degree Felony Murder, a charge which carries a penalty of Life in Prison without Parole. * He was arraigned in 36th District Court today and remanded to jail. His Probable Cause Conference is on February 28, 2020 at 8:30 a.m., and his Preliminary Examination is on March 6, 2020 at 1:30 p.m.
Jaimie Powell Horowitz of the Fair Michigan Justice Project (FMJP) is prosecuting the case. FMJP is a collaboration between the Prosecutor's Office and Fair Michigan Foundation, Inc., headed by President Alanna Maguire. The program assists Michigan law enforcement officers and prosecutors in solving serious crimes against lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transgender persons.
