Al Haidous, a Democrat, was elected November of 2014, as Wayne County Commissioner - 11th District, which covers the following: Belleville, Romulus, the City of Wayne, Huron Township, Sumpter Township and Van Buren Township; as well as Flat Rock.
Haidous had served as a member of the City of Wayne's City Council from 1993-2001 and Board of Zoning Appeals from 1990-93. He also was a member of the city's Charter Advisory Committee in 1992 and the Commercial Revitalization Initiative-Downtown Wayne Steering Committee from 1991 to '92.
As Mayor of Wayne from 2001 until 2014. During his time as mayor, the city found ways to save money, including merging Fire and Parks & Recreation department services with the neighboring city of Westland and consolidated Public Safety dispatch with the city of Westland and the city of Inkster. As mayor, he chaired the city's Retirement Board, Risk Management Committee, Real Estate Committee and Downtown Development Authority, and was a member of the Cable Communications Regulatory Commission. Also, Haidous is Chair of the Wayne County Commission Economic Development Committee, the Public Service Committee and the Building Consolidation and Document Storage Committee (2024).
Since 2007, Haidous has served as a board member for the Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation, better known as SMART, and was its vice-chairman from 2013 to '14 and Chair from 2014 to present. He also has chaired the Southeast Michigan Community Alliance, Wayne County Community Development Block Grant Advisory Council, the Conference of Western Wayne, Central Wayne County Sanitation Authority and Chair of the Wayne County Airport Authority. In 2015, he was named to the Governor's Talent Investment Board.
He was a Paul Harris Fellow with the Rotary Club of Wayne, an international ambassador for the Shriners Hospital for Children Moslem Temple Hospital Fund Drive, a member of The Salvation Army-Middlebelt Center advisory board and vice president of the Wayne Chamber of Commerce.
Haidous has been recognized for his service at the local, county, and national levels, earning the Wayne Chamber of Commerce Person of the Year award in 1991, the Excellence Award in 2000 from Wayne County Executive Edward McNamara for his service to the Community Development Block Grant Advisory Council, the Legislative Award from The Senior Alliance in 2014 and received the Michigan Works Association Volunteer of the year Award - 2023. He was inducted into the International Institute Foundation Hall of Fame in 2012.
Prior to his career in public service, Haidous and his wife, Mary, owned and operated Al's Friendly Market for 35 years in the city of Wayne. They are the proud parents of five children and have 10 grandchildren.
