City of Inkster

The City of Inkster is located in central Wayne County about seventeen miles west of Detroit. The city is basically a residential community with some industrial and commercial development. This is concentrated along Michigan Avenue [US-12], and Middlebelt and Inkster Roads.

Michigan Avenue traverses the community east and west and provides connections with nearby Interstate 94 Freeway and Telegraph Road [US-24]. A Conrail railroad line parallels Michigan Avenue on the south.

The community is endowed with fine civic-minded, social-conscious leadership as evidenced by a city beautification program and neighborhood conservation program.

The City of Inkster was originally part of Bucklin Township, which was created in 1827. The 143-square-mile township was later broken up into the townships of Nankin [now Westland], Livonia, Dearborn and Redford.

The city was named after Robert Inkster, a native of the Shetland Islands, 50 miles off the coast of Norway. The name "Inkster," is said to come from a Norse name, "Ingasetter," which is a person's name plus the term for summer pasture.
