It's a joint effort by the National Football
League, the Greening of Detroit, the City of Detroit, the Super Bowl XL Host
Committee, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Forest Service to provide
300 trees to Wayne County Parks Division to help improve the environment. These
trees will compliment two existing environmental programs already established
in Wayne County's Hines Park through the County's Bennett Arboretum restoration
and "Grow Zones" initiatives.
The trees include several species of Oak, Maples, and Choke Cherry, all native
to Southeast Michigan. They will be maintained and cared for by a host of
volunteers and the Wayne County Parks tree maintenance staff.
The Super Bowl Committee is providing the trees to help offset adverse
environmental impacts of the February 2006 game, while showing their commitment
to the long-term health and beautification for Wayne County residents and
guests.
"These trees and the areas surrounding them will one day serve as homes for a
variety of animals and continue to make Wayne County's Hines Park an Urban
Forest gem that everyone can enjoy long after the game," said Wayne County CEO
Robert Ficano.
