COVID-19 VACCINE BOOSTER FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

The Wayne County Health Department is now administering COVID-19 vaccine booster shots to immunocompromised residents.

Boosters are available at no cost to eligible residents at all Wayne County-sponsored vaccine sites. Immunocompromised individuals seeking a booster should wait at least 28 days after receiving their second vaccine dose before obtaining a third shot.

Individuals should get a booster dose of the same vaccine as their previous vaccination.

Is the booster shot different from previous vaccines?
No. A booster shot is an additional dose of the vaccine.
If people need a booster, does that mean that vaccines aren't working?
COVID-19 vaccines are working. They have been proven to be safe and effective at preventing serious disease or hospitalization. Boosters for immunocompromised individuals are necessary because they are especially vulnerable as they may not build the same level of immunity with two-dose vaccine compared to people who are not immunocompromised.
How do I know if I qualify for a booster?

Pfizer & Moderna

A single booster dose of the vaccine may be administered at least 6 months after completion of a primary series to individuals:

  • 65 years of age and older
  • 18 through 64 years of age at high risk of severe COVID-19
  • 18 through 64 years of age with frequent institutional or occupational exposure to SARS-CoV-2

J&J

A single booster dose of the Janssen (Johnson and Johnson) COVID-19 Vaccine may be administered at least 2 months after completion of the single-dose primary regimen to individuals 18 years of age and older.

Where can I get a booster?
Immunocompromised residents can receive a booster at a Wayne County vaccine clinic. Call 1-866-610-3885 to make an appointment. More information is available at WayneCounty.com/COVID19.
Do I still need to wear a mask if I receive the booster?
Yes. Everyone, regardless of vaccination status, should wear a mask in public indoor spaces to slow the spread of COVID-19 and protect the immunocompromised and those medically unable to get vaccinated.
I'm not vaccinated, can I still get my initial vaccine shots?
Yes. The vaccines are safe, effective, and available at no cost. Call 1-866-610-3885 to make an appointment. More information is available at WayneCounty.com/COVID19.
