MARSHMALLOW DROP

A blizzard of twenty thousand marshmallows will fill the sky as they tumble from the Easter Bunny’s helicopter. Co-sponsored by ITC Holdings and Taylor Ford.

Six miles of Hines Park (Hines Drive) will be closed to traffic every Saturday for the public of all ages to run, walk, skate, or cycle safely. Hines Drive will be closed from the Helms Haven Picnic Area (west of Outer Drive) to the Nankin Mills Area (near Ann Arbor Trail). Parking is available at Nankin Mills picnic area.
FISHING DERBY
Saturday, May 18
8:00 am at Hines Park - Waterford Bend Area, Northville
All kids ages 12 and younger are welcome to have some fishing fun and win prizes. The Rouge River will be stocked with rainbow trout and a casting contest will take place. All anglers need to bring their own equipment and bait. This event is co-sponsored by the Vietnam Veterans of America – Plymouth Chapter 528 and Northville Parks and Recreation. Register on site starting at 7:30 am.
NURSERY SCHOOL OLYMPICS
Thursday, June 6
10:30 am at Elizabeth Park, Trenton
Wayne County Parks is hosting this event for tomorrow’s champions. Events include Marshmallow Shot Put, Big Wheel Grand Prix (children must bring their own big wheel or bike), Paper Plate Discus, Diaper Derby, Toddler Trot and more! Children ages 5 and younger and their parents are welcome. Co-sponsored by Trenton Parks and Recreation
NATURE FEST
Saturday, June 22
1:00 pm – 4:00 pm at Crosswinds Marsh, Sumpter Township
The whole family will enjoy this fun filled Nature Fest! This nature-oriented event will feature live entertainment, nature crafts and games, a face painting clown and free canoeing. Come and see one of the few nesting pairs of bald eagles in Wayne County or enjoy a nature hike led by our county naturalists. All kinds of creatures will be on hand at the animal tent, and Live Animals Presentations. Contest activities for the kids include a fishing contest, a scavenger hunt, a nature photo contest and a nature drawing/painting contest. Please bring your best nature photo, painting or drawing to be judged. Contest registration begins at 1:00 pm and prizes will be awarded to the winners of each contest at 4:00 pm. A limited number of fishing poles are available for those who may need to borrow one.
SENIOR FUN FEST

Join Wayne County Executive Robert A. Ficano for an afternoon of food, bingo, entertainment, demonstrations and wheel of fortune. Free tickets are available at our Nutrition Center or by calling Senior Services at (734) 727-7373.
MUD DAY
Tuesday, July 9
11:00 am – 1:00 pm at Hines Park - Nankin Mills Area, Westland.
Combine tons of mud and tons of water and you have created every child’s fantasy and every mother’s nightmare! To top off the event, we will crown our champions, King and Queen Mud! The Western Wayne Hazmat team will be on hand to hose off the muddy kids! This event is for kids 12 years old and younger. Co-sponsored by ITC Holdings.
WAYNE COUNTY NEW COUNTRY FEST ON THE RIVER

Head down to Elizabeth Park for the second annual Country Fest on the River! This is destined to be the premier country event of the summer with five regional country acts on stage throughout the day. Call the Parks office for a complete entertainment schedule. There is a $5 donation requested for parking during the event.
JAZZ ON THE RIVER

Bring your blankets and chairs and get ready to tap your feet to the beat of cool jazz. Call the Parks office in July for the exciting schedule. There is a $5 donation requested for parking during the event.
CRUISIN’ HINES
Sunday, August 25
9:00 a.m. – 5:00 pm from Ann Arbor Trail to Outer Drive
Do you remember cruising Hines Drive back in the ‘70’s? Well, then you are going to love this new cruise! Hines Park will be closed to “normal” traffic from Ann Arbor Trail to Outer Drive. Traffic on this section will be limited to classic cars and hot rods.
SOMEWHERE IN TIME
Sunday, September 15

This fun-filled family event is designed to recreate Elizabeth Park in the late 1920’s. Antique auto displays, riverboat rides, musical entertainment and refreshments. The children’s games and entertainment area is a sure hit for all ages! Sponsored in cooperation with Trenton Parks and Recreation.
NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE DAY
Saturday, September 21
1:00 – 4:00 pm at Nankin Mills Interpretive Center, Westland
The North American Indian Association will host a special Social Gathering on the grounds of Nankin Mills to share their culture and their heritage. A drumming circle will lead the dancers in beautiful regalia through the ceremony. These dedicated drummers, dancers, singers and artisans follow the Pow Wow trail all over North America. Native American artisans will demonstrate, display and sell their crafts. Native American food will also be available for purchase. Bring the whole family to share in this celebration of America’s first people. Bring your own lawn chair and umbrella for shade, as seating is limited. Outdoor event, all ages welcome. Co-sponsored by the Friends of Nankin Mills.
FIRST RESPONDERS MEMORIAL HALF MARATHON & 5K RUN

Help us commemorate the new First Responders Memorial with a run along Hines Drive! There will be a half marathon and 5k run that will end at the First Responders Memorial. For registration information, please call the Parks office.
HALLOWEEN FOREST FUN HIKE
Friday, October 18 at Nankin Mills Interpretive Center
Register for one start time: 6 pm, 6:30 pm, 7:00 pm, or 7:30 pm. Program is 1½ - 2 hours.
$6 per child and $2 per adult. You must pre-register for this program.
Take a guided night hike to meet our “not-so-scary and sort-of-silly” nature-related characters. These costumed creatures will tell you all about themselves! Please arrive 15 minutes before your starting time. Hikes will be outdoors, so dress accordingly. Program will be moved indoors only if it’s very rainy. After a 45 minute hike you will come inside to meet many amazing live creatures at an animal show! Ages 4 – Adult. Co-sponsored by the Friends of Nankin Mills.

FAMILY HOLIDAY FEST & TREE LIGHTING

4:00 – 6:00 pm at Nankin Mills Interpretive Center, Westland
$6 per child, $2 per adult for crafts and games (4:00-5:15 pm). No charge for Santa visit and tree lighting (5:15 – 6:00 pm). Co-sponsored by Friends of Wayne County Parks
Join us for an old-fashioned celebration of the season at historic Nankin Mills. From 4:00 – 5:15 pm families can participate in unique holiday games, such as “fruitcake bowling”, “Pin the nose on Rudolph”, and “Reindeer antler wreath toss”, as well as make several seasonal crafts to take home. The second part of the program is sponsored by the Friends of Nankin Mills and features a community sing-a-long, Mill Lighting, and special visit from St. Nick! This will be the 26th anniversary of the Friends of Nankin Mills Mill Lighting!! All ages welcome, building is too crowded for strollers. No charge for 3 years and younger.
