Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Kayvon Barrett, 27, of Detroit, in connection with the non-fatal shooting of his eight-year-old son.

On October 3, 2023, at approximately 11:00 a.m., Detroit police officers were dispatched to a residence in the 14890 block of Snowden Street for a reported shooting. Upon their arrival, officers located the child in the living room of the home, suffering from a gunshot wound to his head. Medics arrived on the scene and transported the child to a local hospital for treatment.

It is alleged that the child found an unsecured handgun in the home and fired it, striking himself in the head.

Kayvon Barret has been charged with four counts of Second-Degree Child Abuse. *

He was arraigned this morning in 36th District Court. Defendant Barret was given a $100,000 cash bond with a GPS tether and house arrest. A Bond Re-determination Hearing is scheduled for October 9, 2023, at 9:00 a.m., before Judge William McConico. The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for October 20, 2023, at 8:30 a.m., and the Preliminary Examination is scheduled for October 27, 2023, at 8:45 a.m., before Judge Kenneth King. "I am so sad to hear that another child has been injured by finding an unsecured gun. I don't know what more I can say. Lock and secure your weapons to avoid a tragic situation," said Prosecutor Kym Worthy.
