COVID-19 Vaccinations for Children 5-11 Years Old

November 2, 2021: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a final recommendation approving that children 5 to 11 years old be vaccinated against COVID-19 with the Pfizer-BioNTech pediatric vaccine. The vaccine was found to be 90.7% effective in preventing COVID-19 in children ages 5 through 11. Also, data from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and CDC shows that children 5 to 11 years of age account for approximately 40% of pediatric cases. (Source: www.fda.gov)

Pediatric doses are available at all of the Wayne County Public Health COVID-19 Vaccination Clinics (see further below for hours and addresses).

Please continue to check this webpage or call 1-866-610-3885 for updates on when pediatric doses will be available at our remaining COVID-19 Vaccination Clinics.

Children aged 5-11 will receive 1 pediatric dose of Pfizer vaccine, followed by a second dose in 21 days. Note: Moderna and Johnson and Johnson (J&J) have not been approved for this age group.

COVID-19 cases in children can result in hospitalizations, deaths, MIS-C (inflammatory syndromes) and long-term complications, such as "long COVID," in which symptoms can linger for months. Getting your children vaccinated can help protect them against COVID-19, as well as reduce disruptions to in-person learning and activities by helping curb community transmission.

Also, vaccines will be available at some pediatrician's offices, family doctors, or local pharmacies, contact your pediatrician's office to obtain more information. The Wayne County Health Department continues to collaborate with local schools to offer in-school vaccine clinics.

VACCINE AND BOOSTER ELIGIBILTY

All individuals aged 5 and older are now eligible to receive the Pfizer vaccine. All residents aged 18 and older are also eligible to receive either Moderna, Johnson & Johnson, or Pfizer vaccines. All residents 16+ are eligible for the Pfizer booster.

Residents can schedule appointments through their hospital group, other vaccine providers, or through the Wayne County Health Department. To make an appointment at a Wayne County community clinic or to request an at-home vaccination for home-bound residents, please call 1-866-610-3885. Transportation assistance is also available.

Vaccines are provided at no cost to residents. Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson (J&J) COVID-19 vaccines are available at all Wayne County Public Health locations.

The Wayne County Health Department is now administering Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson (J&J) COVID-19 vaccine booster shots to eligible individuals. Boosters are available at no cost to eligible residents at all Wayne County-sponsored vaccine sites. Individuals seeking a Pfizer or Moderna booster should wait at least 6 months after receiving their second vaccine dose before obtaining the booster shot. Individuals seeking a Johnson & Johnson booster should wait at least 2 months after completion of the single-dose primary regimen before obtaining the booster shot.

Eligible residents can receive a booster at any Wayne County vaccine clinic by walking in or making an appointment. Call 1-866-610-3885 to make an appointment.
