Regulated Facilities

The Land Resource Management Division (LRMD) regulates over fifty facilities in Wayne County involved in the transfer, processing and containment of solid waste. Below is an index of terms used to describe the many facilities regulated by the LRMD.

  • Landfills - A specially engineered and constructed site where solid waste is managed with minimal impact to the environment.

  • Type II Landfill - A landfill that is licensed to accept municipal solid waste.

  • Type III Landfill - A landfill that is licensed to accept industrial solid waste.

  • Solid Waste Transfer Facility - A tract of land, a building and any appurtenances, or a container, or any combination of land, buildings, or containers that is used or intended for use in the rehandling or storage of solid waste incidental to the transportation of the solid waste, but is not located at the site of generation or the site of disposal of the solid waste.

  • Type A Transfer Station - A facility that is designed and operated to receive domestic and commercial solid waste from mechanically unloaded vehicles. Typically accept more than 200 cubic yards of waste per day.

  • Type B Transfer Station - A facility that is designed and operated to receive domestic and commercial solid waste from vehicles unloaded by hand. Typically accept less than 200 cubic yards of waste per day.

  • Solid Waste Processing Plant - Tract of land, building, unit, or appurtenance of a building or unit or a combination of land, buildings, and units that is used or intended for use for the processing of solid waste or the separation of material for salvage or disposal, or both.
