Immunizations

Routine immunizations, seasonal influenza, COVID-19, and pneumonia vaccines are provided to eligible infants, children and adults.
Vaccines for Children (VFC) Program

The VFC program works with community providers to make sure that uninsured and under-insured children get the vaccines they need. Our goal is to make sure that children in Wayne County are up to date on their immunizations so that they are protected from vaccine-preventable diseases. Staff in this program visit doctor's offices to conduct staff trainings and makes sure that the offices are following the Centers for Disease Control guidelines for the program. Approximately 150 pediatric and family practice offices participate. We also offer VFC vaccines in our clinic.

  • Provides oversight of Immunization Program to medical providers in the jurisdiction participating in the Vaccines for Children Program

  • Conduct site visits at VFC-participating offices to monitor compliance to state and federal VFC guidelines

  • Provides immunization-related materials to providers and the community

School Immunization Program
Children entering kindergarten thru 7th grade are required to be up to date on vaccines. Schools are required to report children's vaccine data to the local health department through the Michigan Care Improvement Registry (MICR). The School Immunization program monitors 70,000 children's immunization records in over 900 schools and child-care programs through MICR.
Immunization Waivers
  • Michigan parents or guardians opting out of the vaccinations required for children to attend childcare or school, must request a waiver from their local public health department. Waivers are required for children enrolled in kindergarten, 7th grade, new to a school district, or childcare whose parents opt not to vaccinate.

  • If an unvaccinated child is exposed to a vaccine- preventable infection, or case(s) occur in the school or childcare, the child may be excluded from attending for the duration of the communicable period.

  • The health department CANNOT issue Medical Waivers. A medical waiver is issued by a physician and submitted to the school or childcare when a child cannot receive vaccine for medical reasons. Waivers issued by the health department are for parents choosing not to vaccinate based on religious or philosophical beliefs or other concerns.

To obtain a non-medical immunization waiver for your child's school or childcare, please contact the Wayne County Department of Health, Human & Veterans Services at (734) 727-7125.
