How do I add someone to my deed?
We recommend that you consult an attorney or real estate professional for assistance in preparing the proper document that will convey the type of interest you want a particular person or entity to have in your property.
My spouse died, how do I remove my spouse's name from my deed?
You can record a copy of your spouses death certificate and a new deed showing you, as survivor, own the property.
Is there someone in this office who can help me prepare my deed?
No. Our staff does not provide legal advice or document preparation assistance. Please consult an attorney or title company for help.
Why did the Register of Deeds office place a lien on my property?
This office does not place liens on property. We record liens that other people, businesses or government units place on property so they become part of our permanent records database.
How do I check to see if a property has a lien against it, if taxes are owed on the property or if the property has been foreclosed on?
You can use our Self-Service Center to look up property to see if a lien is in place or if the property has been foreclosed on by entering the address or the name of the grantor (person who conveys property by deed) or grantee (person who property is conveyed to). Alternatively, one of our staff members at the counter in the lobby can look up the property for you. There is a fee for this service. (Please see fee schedule.) How do I make arrangements to pay my property taxes?
Contact the Wayne County Treasurer's Office to make arrangements to pay your property taxes. That office is located on the 5th floor of this building.

Check the Wayne County Treasurer's website, www.waynecounty.com/treasurer for instructions on purchasing a home that the Wayne County Treasurer has foreclosed on due to non-payment of property taxes.
How do I change the name of the person who is to receive tax notices on my property?
Contact the Assessor's Office for your municipality to change the name of the person who receives tax notices on your property.
Who do I contact if someone has fraudulently taken my property?
You can contact the Mortgage and Deed Fraud Unit, a joint task force of the Wayne County Register of Deeds, Wayne County Prosecutor and Wayne County Sheriff. The telephone number for the unit is 313-224-5869.
