Gary Woronchak (Dist. 13)
Gary Woronchak was elected to the Wayne County Commission in 2004 after serving for six years in the Michigan House of Representatives.
Prior to his service in the state House, Commissioner Woronchak was a community journalist for 25 years. He spent most of his career at the Dearborn Press & Guide, where he worked for 23 years, 16 as editor, and also was managing editor of The Daily Tribune in Royal Oak.
Commissioner Woronchak was raised in Dearborn, educated in Dearborn, has raised his own family in Dearborn and has spent most of his career working in Dearborn.
His education was entirely Dearborn-based. He attended Whitmore-Bolles Elementary and Edison Junior High, graduated in 1973 from Edsel Ford High School, attended Henry Ford Community College and then graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in political science from the University of Michigan-Dearborn in 1978.
Before being elected by his colleagues to be chairman of the Wayne County Commission for the 2011-12, 2013-14, 2015-16 and 2017-18 terms, Commissioner Woronchak chaired the Committee on Audit, which provides financial and operational oversight through the review of reports of the Legislative Auditor General and outside auditors, and monitors compliance with findings. He also served on Committee on Government Operations, and was vice chair of the Committee on Economic Development.
During his six years in the state House of Representatives, Commissioner Woronchak had 22 bills signed into law. He passed legislation to double the special income tax exemption for senior citizens from $900 to $1,800, established a state tax credit for adoption expenses and helped create the Michigan Education Savings Program to help families save for college.
He also was instrumental in lowering the state income tax rate from 4.4 percent to 3.9 percent, and helped to increase unemployment benefits for those who lose their jobs.
Commissioner Woronchak is married to Vivian, and they have a daughter and two grandchildren.
Commissioner Woronchak, a Democrat, is a member of the League of Women Voters Dearborn/Dearborn Heights.
