Raymond Basham (Dist. 14)

A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, Commissioner Raymond E. Basham was first elected to the Wayne County Commission in 2010 after serving for two terms in the Michigan Senate.

Born in Roanoke, Va., Basham served with the Air Force from 1962-66, before becoming an employee with Ford Motor Co. from 1969-97. During his tenure with Ford, he was appointed as an employee support services representative for the United Auto Workers Local 245. He also served on various UAW committees, including the bargaining and education committees.

Basham, a Democrat, served as an auxiliary police officer for the city of Taylor from 1979-84. He was later elected as the constable in Taylor, serving from 1987-89. He was elected to the Taylor City Council in 1989 and served until 1997. That year, Basham won a special election to serve as a state representative. He went on to win re-election in 1998 and 2000. Basham served in the state Senate from 2003-09. He and his wife, Iva, live in Brownstown Township and have two children, Brian and Tracy, and four grandchildren.
