Experienced Legislator Joins Commission

On January 7, 2016, Glenn S. Anderson was appointed to the Wayne County Commission to fill the vacancy of former Commissioner Richard LeBlanc, who began his first term as the Westland City Clerk on January 1. Anderson, who was recommended by LeBlanc, was seated after a unanimous vote of the Commission to represent the 12th District, which covers Garden City, Inkster and most of Westland.

The Wayne County Charter requires that a replacement be named by the Commission within 30 days of a commissioner's resignation. While the departing commissioner can recommend a replacement, the vote is conducted by the remaining commissioners. "I am appreciative to the Wayne County Commission for the unanimous vote of confidence in my appointment to fill the unexpired term of former Commissioner Richard LeBlanc," Anderson said after the vote. "I look forward to continuing the work of securing the county's finances, strengthening processes to bring greater efficiency and accountability to county government, while striving to provide exceptional services to our residents and businesses."

Anderson (D-Westland) comes to the Commission with a wealth of experience in both local and state government. Well-known to many in the area as "Senator Anderson," he was a member of the Michigan Senate from 2007-14, where he represented four communities, including Garden City and Westland. Anderson was recognized for many of his legislative successes, including passage of his bills that added reporting of Cyber-bullying to the law to fight bullying in our schools. He also created the Breast Cancer Awareness fundraising license plate with his legislation. Prior to the Senate, he served in the Michigan House of Representatives from 2001-06 and on the Westland City Council from 1991-2000. During 2015, Anderson served as the County Commission's appointee to the sevenmember Wayne County Ethics Board. "I have served in numerous legislative capacities, including vice-chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee. My experience was a factor in (Commission) Chairman (Gary) Woronchak appointing me to the Ways and Means committee, the county's budget committee," Anderson said, "I've found my experience as a legislator invaluable in helping tackle the difficult and complex problems that Wayne County still faces."

Commissioner Anderson and his wife, Gail, have lived in Westland since 1978, where they raised a family that now includes two adult children and two grandchildren. He has been a Realtor since 1979 and also worked for Ford Motor Co. while a UAW member for 28 years.
