Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Reichard Lee Williams-Lewis, 37, of Detroit, in connection with fatally shooting a 55-year-old Riverview male hotel employee and barricading himself in a hotel room for over seven hours before being placed under arrest by Dearborn SWAT officers.

On October 6, 2022, at 1:09 p.m., Dearborn Police Chief Issa Shanin and Cpl. Andrew Ballard responded to multiple reports of shots fired by a man armed with a rifle at the Hampton Inn located in the 22320 block of Michigan Avenue in Dearborn. When they arrived at the hotel, a 21-year-old woman employee was distraught and alleged that the defendant was armed and shot at her striking an office door, causing injuries her face and eyes. The defendant also pointed his rifle at a 49-year-old Virginia woman who was a hotel occupant, and a 36-year-old Lincoln Park woman hotel employee.

Chief Shanin and Cpl. Ballard formed a response team of other officers and located the defendant on the third floor. A 55-year-old male hotel employee was also discovered on the third-floor suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to a local hospital and pronounced deceased.

It is alleged that Defendant Williams-Lewis fatally shot the 55-year-old male employee multiple times. Chief Shanin and Cpl. Ballard encountered Williams-Lewis who refused to obey police commands and barricaded himself in a hotel room.

For approximately seven hours police negotiators spoke with the defendant. When he asked to speak with defense attorney Gabi Silver, she was contacted and assisted the police with negotiations. He eventually exited the room and was taken into custody by Dearborn SWAT officers.

Defendant Williams-Lewis has been charged with one count of Premeditated First-Degree Murder, one count of Assault with Intent to Murder, two counts of Felonious Assault, one count of Resisting and Obstructing a Police Officer, and five counts of Felony Firearm. *

"The evidence is this case is alarming. We have long learned that no place is sacred when it comes to gun violence. Not churches, not movie theaters, not grocery stores or hotels. I would like to pose a question to every legislator in this state. When is enough enough? Please let me know," said Prosecutor Kym Worthy.

Defendant Williams-Lewis was arraigned and remanded to jail today in 19th District Court before Judge Eugene Hunt. His Probable Cause Conference is on October 21, 2022, and his Preliminary Examination is on October 28, 2022.

Please ask the Dearborn Police Department for a photograph of the defendant.

*The charges are allegations and defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
