Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Brooke Lynn-Denise Charles, 25, of Grosse Pointe Woods, in connection with a car crash that killed Frazer High School teacher Connor McMahon, 23, of Roseville.

On June 13, 2023, at approximately 10:20 p.m., Michigan State Troopers were dispatched to eastbound I-94 freeway near Beaufait Street in Harper Woods for a reported two vehicle crash. Upon their arrival, Troopers observed Mr. McMahon unresponsive, lying outside of his vehicle. Medics arrived on scene and pronounced the victim deceased.

Mr. McMahon's car had a flat tire on I-94 and he pulled over to change the tire on the right shoulder and partially on the embankment of the highway. It is alleged that Defendant Charles was intoxicated on I-94, and drove her car off the roadway striking Mr. McMahon, fatally injuring him, before fleeing the scene on foot. After a brief foot chase, Harper Woods police officers were able to apprehend the defendant.

Brooke Lynn-Denise Charles has been charged with one count of Operating While Intoxicated Causing Death, one count of Leaving a Scene of an Accident - Causing Death, and one count of Resisting and Obstructing a Police Officer. *

"A series of horrible - and allegedly criminal decisions by now Defendant Charles - led her to being charged with numerous offenses. The evidence will show that she caused the death of Connor McMahon, a much beloved teacher," said Prosecutor Kym Worthy. "The messaging about drinking and driving has been around for decades. It cannot be repeated enough."

She was arraigned on June 17, 2023, in 36th District Court before Magistrate Joseph Boyer and given a $50,000 cash bond. The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for June 28, 2023, at 1:30 p.m., in 32A District Court before Judge Rebekah Coleman. Please request a photograph of the defendant from the Michigan State Police.

*The charges are allegations and defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
