Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Bassam Yatooma, 50, (DOB: 07/06/1970), of West Bloomfield, in connection with the assault of Andrea Warren,47, (DOB: 10/08/1973), of Detroit. The alleged incident occurred at his Detroit convenience store.

On March 12, 2021, at approximately 8:07 p.m. Andera Warren entered Defendant Yatooma's convenience store in the 15000 block of Puritan Street in Detroit to purchase a drink. The defendant did not want her in the store. It is alleged that he walked over to Ms. Warren, grabbed her, dragged her across the floor of the store, punched her on the right side of her face, and placed his hands around her neck, strangling her. A witness observed that Ms. Warren's right eye was visibly red and swollen. Medics at the scene saw the victim bleeding from the nose. She was later taken to a local hospital and diagnosed with a fractured nose.

Bassam Yatooma has been charged with one count of Assault with Intent to do Great Bodily Harm Less than Murder or by Strangulation, a 10-year felony, and one count of Aggravated Assault, a one-year misdemeanor. * He will be arraigned on Friday, June 4, 2021, after 10:00 a.m. in 36th District Court. The defendant is represented by attorney Randall Upshaw. Please request a photograph of the defendant from the Detroit Police Department after the arraignment.

"The facts in this case are very unsettling. The alleged actions taken by this defendant are really beyond comprehension when the totality of the circumstances are examined," said Prosecutor Worthy.

*The charges are allegations and defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
