Today Prosecutor Kym L. Worthy has charged a Detroit juvenile male, age 11, in connection with the shooting death of a three-year-old boy. The shooting took place on Monday, August 3, 2015, at approximately 1:40 p.m. in the 16000 block of Eastwood Street in Detroit. It is alleged that while visiting his father's house, the 11 year-old juvenile respondent took a handgun from a bedroom closet and threw it out of the bedroom window into the backyard. He then retrieved the gun and entered a vehicle parked in the father's backyard. The three-year-old entered the same parked vehicle and a short time later, was shot once in the face by the juvenile respondent.

"I cannot remember a time where we have charged someone so young with taking a life. Very unfortunately and very tragically, the alleged facts in this case demanded it," said Prosecutor Worthy. "The charged respondent here will remain in the Juvenile system, but the case remains under investigation. As a result of that, I will not say more at this time."

The juvenile respondent has been charged with Manslaughter - Death by Weapon Aimed with Intent But without Malice and Felony Firearm. The preliminary hearing is set for today, August 5, 2015, at 1:30 p.m. in the Juvenile Detention Center located at 1325 St. Antoine Street in Detroit.
