Detroit Man Charged in Block Party Mass Shooting
Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Demitrus Tiwan Shaw, 19, of Detroit, in connection with the fatal shootings of a Shanae Fletcher, 20, of Harrison Township and Phillip Arnold, 21, of Detroit, and the nonfatal shootings of a 16-year-old girl, two 17-year-old girls, a 17-year-old boy, a 19-year-old woman, two 20-year-old women, and two 22-year-old men, all of Detroit, a 17-year-old girl, and a 17-year-old boy, of Clinton Township, two 18-year-old women, of Eastpointe, a 20-year-old woman, of Oak Park, a 21-yearold woman, a 21-year-old man, and a 24-year-old woman, of Highland Park, a 21-year-old woman, of Southfield, and a 21-year-old woman of Chesterfield Township.
On July 7, 2024, at approximately 2:25 a.m., Detroit police officers were dispatched to a residence in the 13800 block of Rossini Drive for a reported shooting. Upon their arrival, officers located multiple victims suffering from gunshot wounds. Medics arrived on the scene and pronounced Ms. Fletcher and Mr. Arnold deceased. The surviving victims were transported to a local hospital for treatment.
It is alleged that Defendant Shaw produced and fired a handgun multiple times into a crowd, fatally wounding Ms. Fletcher and Mr. Arnold, and non-fatally wounding the remaining victims, before fleeing the scene. Investigation by the Detroit Police Department led to the arrest of the defendant on January 7, 2025.
The case remains under investigation and no further information be released at this time.
Demitrus Tiwan Shaw has been charged with two counts of First-Degree Murder, 19 counts of Assault with Intent to Murder, and 21 counts of Felony Firearm.*
He was arraigned and remanded to jail this afternoon in 36th District Court before Magistrate William Burton. The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for January 21, 2025, and the Preliminary Examination is scheduled for January 27, 2025, before Judge Aliyah Sabree.
