Shawn A. Patterson, 22 (DOB: 02/12/1998), of Detroit, has been charged by Prosecutor Kym L. Worthy in connection with a fatal car crash that killed Leon Freeman, 26, of Hazel Park and Teon Williams, 33, of Detroit.

On April 26, 2020, at 11:46 a.m., it is alleged that Patterson was driving southbound on Baylis Street approaching Pilgrim Street when he disregarded a stop sign and crashed into a car driven by Mr. Freeman with Mr. Williams in the front passenger seat. Patterson left the car and fled from the scene on foot. Police and medics arrived at crash scene and the two men were pronounced deceased. Investigation by the Detroit Police resulted in the arrest of the defendant on May 19, 2020.

Patterson has been charged with two counts each of: Reckless Driving Causing Death; Failure to Stop at the Scene of an Accident Causing Death and Moving Violation Causing Death.*

Prosecutor Worthy said, "Fatal car crashes have increased exponentially over the past year, most as a result of carelessness, recklessness, or gross negligence by the driver that caused the event. This is a disturbing trend that can be slowed if every driver follows the rules that they learned when they were first licensed. This must stop."

Patterson was arraigned this morning in 36th District Court. The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for May 29, 2020 at 8:30 a.m.; the Preliminary Examination is scheduled for June 3, 2020 at 9:00 a.m. Both hearings are before Judge Kenyetta Stanford-Jones in 36th District Court. The defendant received a $20,000 cash/surety bond. Please contact the Detroit Police Department for a photograph of the Defendant.

*The charges are allegations and defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
