Detroit Man Charged in Homicide of Girlfriend
Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Cortez Xavier Coleman, 42, of Detroit, in connection with the homicide of Stacy Smith, 48, also of Detroit.
On June 9, 2023, at approximately 11:23 p.m., Detroit police officers were dispatched to a residence in the 20340 block of Berg Road. Upon their arrival, officers located Ms. Smith in her bedroom, deceased with a stab wound to the chest and a burn on her right leg.
It is alleged that Defendant Coleman strangled the victim, fatally injuring her. It is also alleged that the defendant stabbed the victim with a knife and burned her right leg before fleeing the scene. Investigation by the Detroit Police Department led to the arrest of the defendant on June 12, 2023.
Cortez Xavier Coleman has been charged with one count of First-Degree Murder. *
Coleman was arraigned and remanded to jail this morning in 36th District Court before Magistrate Jeffrey Kleparek. The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for July 5, 2023, and the Preliminary Examination is scheduled for July 12, 2023, before Judge Kenneth King.
