Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged LeRoy Metoyer III, 37, of Detroit, in connection with the homicide of one-year-old Justice Starks.

On November 29, 2022, at a residence in the 19200 block of Lancashire Street in Detroit, it is alleged that Defendant Metoyer was caring for the infant of a friend when he fatally assaulted her. Medics were called to the scene and transported the infant to a local hospital for treatment. Justice succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased on December 1, 2022. The Wayne County Medical Examiner determined that the cause of death was multiple blunt force trauma to the head.

More complete facts and evidence will be placed on the record in court at the Preliminary Examination in the case.

LeRoy Metoyer III has been charged with one count of Felony Murder and one count of First-Degree Child Abuse. *

He was arraigned and remanded to jail today in 36th District Court. His Probable Cause Conference is on March 13, 2023, and his Preliminary Examination is on March 20, 2023, both before Judge Kenneth King.

" I do not want us to ever become desensitized to the realities of child abuse in our communities. We must be aware of cases like this where the alleged actions of the defendant caused the loss of a young life," said Prosecutor Worthy.

Please request a photograph of the defendant from the Detroit Police Department.

*The charges are allegations and defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
