Detroit Man Charged in Maine Street Fatal Shooting
Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Larnell Fredrick Smith, 34, (DOB: 02/03/1988), of Detroit, in connection with the fatal shooting of Dijon Nelson, 32, also of Detroit.
On August 25, 2022, at approximately 8:05 a.m., Detroit police officers were dispatched to a residence in the 17840 block of Maine Street for a reported shooting. Upon their arrival, officers observed the victim on the front steps of the residence suffering from multiple gunshots to his upper body. Medics arrived on scene and pronounced Mr. Nelson deceased.
It is alleged that Defendant Smith and the victim had a brief discussion. The defendant produced and fired a handgun multiple times, fatally wounding Mr. Nelson.
Larnell Fredrick Smith has been charged with one count of Second-Degree Murder, one count of Felon in Possession of a Firearm, and two counts of Felony Firearm. *
He was arraigned on August 28, 2022, in 36th District Court and given a $500,000 cash bond. The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled on September 8, 2022, and the Preliminary Examination is scheduled on September 15, 2022, before Judge Kenneth King.
