Detroit Man Charged in Non-Fatal Shooting of Good Samaritan
Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Daryl Tasmin Smith, 42, of Detroit, in connection with the non-fatal shooting of a 33-year-old man, also of Detroit.
On February 20, 2025, at approximately 4:06 p.m. Wayne State police officers were dispatched to a bus stop in the 5400 block of Cass Avenue for a reported shooting. Upon their arrival, officers located the victim lying in the street, bleeding from his right eye. Medics arrived on the scene and transported the victim to a local hospital for treatment.
It is alleged that the defendant was harassing an elderly woman passenger while on a Detroit bus. The victim came to the aide of the woman to prevent any further harassment. . When the defendant and the victim exited the bus at Cass Avenue and Warren Avenue, it is alleged that Smith took a flare gun out of his hoodie pocket and fired it striking the victim in the eye before fleeing the scene.. Investigation by the Wayne State Police led to the arrest of the defendant a short time later.
Daryl Tasmin Smith has been charged with one count of Assault with Intent to Murder, one count of Assault with Intent to do Great Bodily Harm, and one count of Felonious Assault.*
He was arraigned on February 22, 2025, in 36th District Court and given a $100,000 cash/surety bond with a GPS tether and house arrest. The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for March 3, 2025, at 8:30 a.m., and the Preliminary Examination is scheduled for March 10, 2025, at 8:45 a.m., before Judge Ronald Giles.
