Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Tiwan D. Shaw, 25 (DOB: 06/24/1994) of Detroit, in connection with a non-fatal shooting incident that occurred during a traffic stop by three Detroit police officers.

On February 5, 2020, at approximately 4:54 p.m., three Detroit Police Officers were in a semi-marked car patrolling the area of Frankfort Street and Nottingham Road when they observed a car with a 2006 temporary license plate and initiated a traffic stop. The woman driving the car stopped and when she did, Shaw opened the front passenger door and fled in foot.

It is alleged that, after taking several steps away from the vehicle, Shaw produced a firearm and fired multiple shots at the officers. The officers took cover and returned fire. The suspect fled again and almost ran into one of the officers. Shaw fired at the officer and the officer fired back. Shaw then hopped over a privacy fence and was apprehended in the backyard in the 5090 block of Nottingham. Shaw was placed under arrest and taken to a local hospital for treatment of his gunshot wounds. The officers were not wounded during the exchange.

Shaw has been charged with three counts of Assault With Intent to Murder, three counts of Assault With Intent to Do Great Bodily Harm, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Carrying a Concealed Weapon and three counts of Felony Firearm.* He was arraigned in the hospital this afternoon. The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for February 18, 2020 at 8:30 a.m.; the Preliminary Examination is scheduled for February 25, 2020 at 9:00 a.m. Both hearings are before Judge Lynise Bryant in 36th District Court. The defendant received a $3 million cash bond. Please contact the Detroit Police Department for a photograph of the defendant after the arraignment.
*The charges are allegations and defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
